Obituary of Sophie B. Lorek

Sophie B. Pawelek Lorek 1926 – 2017 Utica Sophie Lorek, 91, a lifelong resident of Utica, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the Presbyterian Home for CNY with her family and loved ones by her side. She was born in Utica on May 18, 1926, the daughter of Jacob and Catherine Makuszak Pawelek. Sophie attended Holy Trinity School and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. She was united in marriage to Adolph Lorek on March 7, 1945 in Wichita Falls, TX, a loving union until his passing on July 3, 2006. Sophie was employed for many years with the General Electric Co. and retired from the Joseph & Fiess Co. as a seamstress. She was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Church. Sophie leaves behind a companion and friend Frank Baretta, a son Richard (Joan) Lorek, a daughter, Darlene (Carmen) Newtown and six grandchildren, Richard, Michael (Mary), Steven (Tracy), Christopher, Tammy, Shelly (Bryan) and David (Kristina). Also Surviving are her eight great grandchildren, Brandon, Brittany, Jacob, Aiden, Jimmy, Bryanna, MeKenzie and Greyson, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Dennis Lorek, her three sisters, Mary Topolski, Anna Sieczkowski, Helen Malara and her four brothers, Joseph, John, Stanley and Walter Pawelek. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church. Those who wish may call on Monday from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the Kowalczyk Funeral Home, 1156 Lincoln Ave. Utica. Entombment will take place in Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum at Holy Trinity Cemetery. Sophie's family would like to offer their heartfelt appreciation to the Elm Unit of the Presbyterian Home and Dr. Roger Breslow for all of the excellent care and compassion shown to Sophie during her stay.
