Obituary of Helen T. Matys

Helen T. Matys Utica Helen T. Matys, 89, a lifelong area resident passed away on December 27, 2018 at the Presbyterian Home for CNY. She was born in Utica on May 25, 1929, the daughter of Andrew and Mary Benice Wyka and graduated from Utica Free Academy. Helen was married to Edmund Matys until his passing in 1972. She was employed for twenty – nine years with the Savings Bank of Utica until her retirement. Helen was a member of the West Side Senior Center, the Polish Community Club, as well as the past Vice President of the Polish Legion of American Veterans and Ladies Auxiliary. Her survivors include her children, Patricia and Charles Cunningham, Susan Jackson, Kathy and Lou Settle, Joanne Sinclair, Edward and Barbara Matys, Daniel and Cathy Matys, and Robert and Stacy Matys. Also surviving are her sister, Julie Vosburgh, as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Andrew Matys, long time companion Leo Wojtanowski, her son – in law Oscar Jackson and her sister, Katherine Haydasz. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church. Those who wish may call on Wednesday, (today) January 2, 2019 from 5 – 7 p.m at the Kowalczyk Funeral Home, 1156 Lincoln Ave., Utica.
